BIM Shop Drawings: From Coordinated Model to Construction-Ready Drawings
BIM shop drawings are construction-ready views extracted from a coordinated model, not decorative 3D screenshots. This guide covers view setup, annotation, revisions, fabrication uses and how to hire specialists who can issue usable drawings.
BIM shop drawings are construction-ready drawing sheets extracted from a coordinated model: plans, sections, details, spools, and schedules that a fabricator or installer can use with dimensions, notes and revisions. They are not a screenshot of a colourful 3D view placed on a titleblock. They are not automatically produced because a model exists. View setup, annotation, lineweights, and a revision process are skilled work. If the model is not coordinated, shop drawings will neatly document a clash.
Ready means: the zone is clash-closed or residuals are accepted; equipment is the submitted equipment or a labelled placeholder; hanger rules are applied if they belong at this LOD; view templates exist; the titleblock and numbering are agreed; and a responsible person will stamp. If any of those are missing, you are buying pretty PDFs of a moving target.
Design drawings and shop drawings are different audiences. Design drawings communicate intent. Shop drawings communicate fabrication and installation. Mixing them in one set without a stamp path confuses site. The BIM Execution Plan should say which sheets come from which model state.
View setup in Revit (and similar tools)
Plans need crop regions, underlays, discipline filters, and a scale that matches annotation. Sections must cut the congested place, not a random pretty cut. Callouts must point to real details. 3D isometric views can help spools if they are accompanied by dimensions, not if they replace them. Filters should hide unrelated trades without hiding the thing you are installing.
View templates are the difference between a one-off hero sheet and a pack of eighty consistent sheets. Buying shop drawings without templates means every sheet will be a custom art project and every revision will be expensive.
Annotation: dimensions to grids and to structure, not only to other services that might move. Tags that read parameters, not exploded text that will rot. Notes that cite the specification clause where required. Revision clouds tied to a revision table. If your office uses a particular dimension style, send it.
Architectural shop or installation drawings might include typical room set-outs, ceiling grids, and joinery that is modelled. Many architectural “shop” packages are specialist joinery or facade, which may not live in the architectural Revit file at all. Say which.
Structural shop drawings for steel often leave Revit for a detailing environment. Concrete shop drawings may remain in Revit or in a rebar tool. Do not assume one freelance Revit user is a steel detailer.
MEP shop drawings include floor plans with dimensions to grids, sections through racks, riser diagrams that match 3D, equipment hook-ups, penetration drawings, and spool isometrics. Hanger locations, if in scope, must match the model that was clashed. See contractor BIM.
Revisions, transmittals and the model-drawing bond
Every issued PDF should name the model version it was cut from. If the model moves after issue, the sheets are historic. A specialist should keep a register: sheet, revision, model date, clash cycle ID. Site teams will print the PDF; they will not open Navisworks unless you make them. The PDF must be right.
Outsourcing revisions needs a packet rule: you mark a PDF or a model; they cloud the change; they reissue. Unlimited silent redraws are not a shop drawing service; they are an unpaid design office.

Shop drawing numbering is a contract language. If the main contractor’s register expects a certain prefix, a freelancer inventing a pretty number will stall transmittals. Send the register rules with the brief. Titleblocks carry project names, QP or contractor names, and stamps. Wrong names are not a “BIM issue”; they are an issue that will bounce. The first milestone can be one sheet with the correct titleblock and a dummy view, approved before eighty sheets are produced.
Paper size and plot styles still exist. A model that looks sharp on a 4K monitor can plot as grey mush. Require a plotted PDF at the issue size as the acceptance test, not a screenshot. Lineweights and colour policies (monochrome versus trade colour) belong in the BIM Execution Plan or in an office CAD standard attached to it.
Dimension strategy: what is stable
Dimension to grids, levels, and structure first. Dimension to other services only when the installation needs that relationship and the other service is frozen. Dimensioning a pipe to a cable tray that is still moving trains the site to chase ghosts. Spot elevations on hangers need a datum that matches survey. If the specialist does not know the datum, stop.
Over-dimensioning is a real defect: fifty dimensions on a congested ceiling make a sheet unreadable and guarantee conflicts among the dimensions. Under-dimensioning is the opposite defect: a pretty rack with no way to set out. The sample sheet should show the office’s intended density. Copy that density, do not invent a new visual style per sheet.
Spool isometrics and fabrication tickets
Isometrics should carry spool IDs that match the model parameter and the CAM file if CAM exists. A mismatch is how the wrong pipe is welded. Include a bill of pieces if that is the contractor’s method. Include weld maps only if appointed; they are not a default BIM extra. Revisions on a spool are dangerous; cloud them and freeze CAM until the cloud is accepted.
Architectural joinery shops and facade shops may not want Revit sheets at all. If the specialist is cutting from Revit for a trade that lives in another tool, the method statement must include the export. Shop drawings are a communication product, not a Revit loyalty programme.
Site copies, as-printed versus as-modelled
Once a sheet is printed and marked up on site, the model must either absorb the mark-up or the next issue must show the cloud of what changed in the model only. A freelancer who “fixes” the model without clouding the sheet will desynchronise the crew. The register should say whether site redlines are in the next revision packet. If they are not, they are a different milestone — often the as-built path.
Do not patch PDFs in an illustration tool for convenience if the model did not change. That is how two truths appear. If an emergency patch is unavoidable, log it as a defect and repair the model the same day.
Shop drawing packs as a production line
A pack of eighty sheets is a production line. The first sheet proves the titleblock, the view template, the dimension style, and the revision table. Sheets 2–10 prove that typical zones can be copied without inventing a new graphic language. Sheets 11–80 should be boring in the best sense: same filters, same annotation density, same way of cutting a rack. Buyers who review only sheet 1 will discover on sheet 47 that ceilings were turned on and grids were turned off. Review a typical, a unique plant room, a riser, and a spool. That sample is the milestone.
Batch printing must be part of the method. A specialist who saves eighty views and cannot batch-plot is not finished. PDF naming should match the register. Hyperlinks in PDFs are optional; correct numbers are not.
When architecture issues a new ceiling mid-pack, the production line stops for a packet. Continuing to issue remaining sheets on the old ceiling while “planning to update later” produces a mixed pack that site cannot trust. Stop, cloud, reissue the affected numbers, and record the model date on each.
Coordination stamps on drawings
Some offices stamp “for coordination” versus “for construction.” If your contract uses those stamps, the freelancer must not choose the construction stamp because it looks more official. The BEP or the contractor QA procedure chooses. A construction stamp on an uncoordinated rack is a liability. A coordination stamp on a hanger drawing that the crew will install from is also a mismatch. Align stamp, LOD, and clash state.
Penetrations drawings deserve their own numbers and their own clash against structure. A penetration list that does not match the holes in the structural model is a future core-drill fight. Include a table: grid, level, size, service, fire-stopping note if provided by others.
Architectural and structural sheets from BIM
Joinery and facade shop drawings often live with specialists. If you still want architectural BIM sheets for typical rooms, specify set-out dimensions to grids and finished floor, not only pretty furniture 3D. Structural concrete set-out from Revit can work for simpler geometries; complex rebar is another tool. State the limit so a freelance Revit user is not asked to be a rebar detailer. Steel shop drawings from Revit without a detailing toolchain should be described as “steel coordination drawings,” not as fabrication tickets, unless you truly only need location and member marks.
Reviewers on the contractor side
A shop drawing technician and a reviewer should not be the same person on a large pack if you can avoid it. The reviewer checks dimensions to grids, revision clouds against the transmittal, and whether the sheet matches the last coordinated NWD. On BIMProSG you can buy a small review package separately. Linking shop drawings to quantities and 4D
If a spool is issued, the quantity for that spool should be recoverable from the same elements. If a 4D activity is “install Level 4 corridor rack,” the sheets for that rack should exist and be frozen. These links are optional extras; if you want them, say so. They are how project controls and site stop living in parallel universes. See 4D and 5D and QTO.
Shop drawing transmittals as a dated conversation
A transmittal is not a courtesy email. It is the list of sheets, revisions, and purposes (for review, for construction, superseded). Outsourced shop drawing work should produce a transmittal with every issue. If the main contractor uses a document control system, the specialist should fill that system’s required fields or provide a CSV that can be imported. A ZIP of randomly named PDFs is not an issue.
Superseded sheets must be marked. Site will print the highest revision they can find if you let them. The register should show superseded numbers clearly. When a spool is cancelled, cancel it in the register and in the model parameter so quantities do not keep counting it.
Ceiling plans versus services plans
Reflected ceiling plans and services plans are different sheets. Mixing lights, sprinklers, and ducts on one unreadable plan is a common freelance defect. Split them if the office standard splits them, and keep a combined coordination section for the rack. The combined section is for the meeting; the split plans are for the trades. Both should come from the same model date.
Checking a sheet in ten minutes
Grid bubbles present. Level correct. Scale bar. North. Dimensions to grids. Tags reading parameters. Revision cloud if this is not Rev A. Model date in the titleblock. Filter showing the trade. No exploded CAD patches. If a reviewer cannot finish this in ten minutes, the sheet is too busy or too empty. Use this as the BIMProSG acceptance test for drawing milestones.
Prefabrication tickets versus install sheets
Not every sheet is for the person with a drill. Some sheets are for a factory. Factory sheets need piece marks, material lists, and a freeze that matches CAM. Install sheets need set-out to grids and a sequence note. If you issue one sheet for both audiences, one of them will be underserved. Split the numbers. The model can still be one model. The sheets cannot always be one graphic.
A specialist who has only produced architectural presentation sheets will underserve a mechanical factory. Ask for a spool sample. A specialist who has only produced spools may underserve a ceiling installer who needs a plan. Ask for a plan sample. BIMProSG briefs should name the audience of the pack.
Colour, monochrome and site printers
Site printers are often monochrome and unkind. Trade colour that looks clear on a meeting screen can collapse to identical greys. If the crew is printing black and white, lineweights and linetypes must carry the distinction. Test a monochrome plot of a congested rack. If ducts and trays cannot be told apart, the sheet fails even if the 3D is beautiful.
Holding clouds and the next model drop
When a cloud is on a sheet, the next model drop must not silently move the clouded object without a new revision. That is how site installs the unclouded state. The specialist needs a discipline: cloud, issue, then change the model for the following revision only. Emergency patches belong in the register the same day.
Field sketches and the model of record
When a foreman sketches a route change on a print, that sketch is either a future revision or a rogue install. Contractor QA should collect sketches daily and send a packet to the BIM specialist. The specialist updates the model, clashes the local zone, and issues a clouded sheet. Skipping the clash step because “it is only a small move” is how a small move hits a busduct. BIMProSG packages for shop drawings should include a stated number of field-sketch packets. Extra packets are extra milestones, not a moral failing.
A sketch that cannot be located to a grid is not a packet yet. Ask the site to mark a grid bubble. The specialist should be allowed to reject an unlocatable sketch with a one-line reason. That rejection is quality control, not obstruction.
Issued means plotted, numbered, and tied to a model date
If it cannot be plotted, numbered, and tied to a model date, it is not issued. Colour 3D can travel with the pack as a supplement. The installable artefact is the dimensioned sheet. Buy that artefact. Review it in monochrome. Pay the specialist when the register and the PDFs agree. That is shop drawing outsourcing without romance.
If two sheets disagree about a hanger location, the model is not the single source yet. Stop issuing. Align the views. Then replot. A pack that argues with itself is worse than a late pack, because site will pick the convenient sheet.
A shop drawing pack is finished when the register, the PDFs, and the model date agree, and a monochrome plot of a congested sheet can still be read. That sentence is the acceptance test. Put it on the BIMProSG milestone. Do not accept a flythrough in its place.
CTA: buy sheets from a coordinated model, with a sheet list
Can we issue shop drawings from IFC? Some workflows can. Most building teams still cut sheets from native Revit. Name the software.
Who checks against the specification? The contractor’s reviewer. The freelancer can annotate; they should not pretend to be the specifier unless appointed.
How do we stop drawings drifting from the model? No manual exploding of views. No CAD patching on top of a live sheet. If CAD patches are unavoidable, log them as defects.
Are colour 3D sheets OK? As supplements, yes. As the only install document, no.
What LOD is required? Enough for the fabrication or install task. Often LOD 350–400 language for MEP interfaces and fabrication. See LOD.
Can AI annotate? It may help place tags. A person must check dimensions against grids. See AI and BIM.
